  Lower Rhine

The region Lower Rhine comprises the extensive lowland between the Rhine River - Germany's largest waterway - and the Dutch border from the lines of the cities Aachen/Leverkusen up to the Dutch border near Nijmegen. The Lower Rhine region is enclosed in the east by the Ruhr region. Most of the rivers in the area, such as the Niers or the Schwalm, flow into the Maas River. The Lower Rhine districts Wesel and Kleve belong to the Bishopric of Münster.

Wesel District
One finds the Roman roots of the Lower Rhine civilisation along the Via Romana, which leads from Xanten to Nijmegen in Holland. Castles, fortresses and historic manors are reminders of the luxury of bygone centuries. A visit to the Xanten Archaeological Park, in which the ancient Roman town is being continuously further excavated and reconstructed (more or less a large, growing museum), is absolutely essential.
The citadel in the town of Wesel itself is worth visiting. Today it is a cultural centre that among other things accommodates the Prussian Museum in North Rhineland-Westphalia.
In Dinslaken, an open-air stage that was erected in 1934 directly in the shadow of the fortress beneath the east wing, today serves as the town's central cultural event site. Its special attraction lies in the natural backdrop of the fortress.
The only half-mile trotting course in Germany (also in Dinslaken) annually attracts about 400,000 visitors.

The Kamp Religious Order Museum has found its place opposite the monastery church of the Kamp Abbey near Moers. The museum presents hundreds of years of the history and tradition of the Cistercian order. The exhibition recalls the life and actions of the monks in their era.

The municipality of Hünxe offers the Gartrop Water Castle with its water mill from the 15th century as an attraction.

Kleve District
Special attractions in the town of Kleve are the amphitheatre at Springenberg and the Schwanenburg (fortress). The highest elevation along the Lower Rhine is the 99 metre high Klever Mountain. Prince Johann Moritz von Nassau erected a 6 metre high observation hill on the peak, on which the observation tower stands today. From the tower one has a wide panorama of the entire Klever Land.
Since its reconstruction Moyland Castle accommodates in its walls the former private collection of the van der Grinten brothers. Today, as a museum for modern arts, the castle uniquely combines architecture from the late 19th century with modern and contemporary artistic positions.
More than 800,000 people from Germany, the Benelux nations and many other countries around the world annually visit the Madonna pilgrimage site at Kevelaer. The inconspicuous Madonna with the title "Comforter of the Distressed" has attracted more and more people through the centuries. This fact is understood to be a message: God does not need the magnanimous, the mighty or the impressive - with which one cannot do without - to act; but for God nothing is too slight that he cannot affect anything miraculous.
In Kalkar, the Dutchman Henniie van der Most purchased the former nuclear power plant "Schneller Brüter" ("Fast Breeder") and converted it into a unique leisure time centre - the "Kernwasser-Wunderland" ("Core Water Wonderland").
Also worth a visit is the longest suspension bridge in Germany near Emmerich, which links the right and left shores of the Rhine with each other.
